Wheaton Pool Partners: Fundraising Success Preserves Pool for Future Generations
When the City of Wheaton was concerned by the high estimates of renovating its community pool, residents came together to help out. Citizens formed the Wheaton Pool Partners and used the Wheaton-Dumont Area Community Fund and West Central Initiative to help raise money. They sent appeal letters to residents and to Wheaton school “alums” who perhaps don't live in the area any more, but who fondly remember summers at the pool. To the Partners' surprise and delight, Robert Howard, a 1942 graduate of Wheaton High School, sent $100,000 through the Howard Charitable Foundation for the pool project.
The Wheaton Area Hospital also contributed $100,000 from its foundation, citing the pool's obvious health benefits to children and families.
“The fundraising has been amazing,” said Maureen Tischer, a member of the Wheaton Pool Partners. “Our two $100,000 gifts have been overwhelming. We have received wonderful press. Older people like to talk about how [the pool] was when it was just built, and it brings back good memories for them. Kids want it done now, so it is hard for them to have to wait!” |
